About Us
Background
The Iowa Water Center is a part of a nationwide network of university-based water centers authorized by the 1964 federal Water Resources Act which called for the creation of state water resources institutes to be located at land grant colleges. Their purpose is to encourage interdisciplinary water research and the education and outreach needed to insure research results are applied to real world problems. Currently, all 50 states have such institutes or centers that exist under the general oversight of the National Academies of Science.
Purpose & Function
The purpose of the Iowa Water Center is to facilitate interdisciplinary water research, information-transfer and education. Historically, the Center largely focused on research – identifying relevant research needs and providing funding to a limited number of research projects. Today the Center has a renewed emphasis on information-transfer and outreach with plans to develop as a clearinghouse for research information. While the Center maintains a strong research component, disseminating information to water resource professionals, policy-makers and the public is a priority.
